Florida coach Will Muschamp learned that offensive coordinator Charlie Weis had accepted the head coaching job at Kansas only about an hour before speaking at a Gator Bowl press conference in Jacksonville on Thursday. With Kansas announcing the hire only 15 minutes before that event started, the first-year coach didn’t have time to tell his players that Weis was leaving.
So as they learned of his departure from media reports, several responded on Twitter. In Orlando, kicker Caleb Sturgis got the news while attending the College Football Awards, where he was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award.
“It was a suprise and all but it was a head coaching job and you can’t blame somebody for taking a head coaching job,” Sturgis told Sentinel reporter Brant Parsons.
Sturgis’ teammates and other former and future Gators offered their reactions on Twitter. Here’s a sampling of that.
