Throughout the day today, Florida’s coaching staff will reap the rewards of its hard work. With National Letters of Intent being faxed in throughout signing day, here’s a look at the highlights from one of the Gators’ committed players – Warminster (Pa.) Archbishop Wood TE Colin Thompson.
Colin Thompson, TE, Warminster (Pa.) Archbishop Wood Catholic
6-foot-6, 255 pounds
Buzz: Like fellow TE Kent Taylor, Thompson’s commitment to Florida came in part because of the reputation of former offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. But after Weis’ departure for Kansas in December, Thompson remained committed and praised the hire of Brent Pease. Any moments of doubt were erased when he spoke to Will Muschamp about where the offense is headed.
“I had no worries from there on out. Bang, I’m staying,” he said. “It really is a great school and great fit for me.”
One of the top tight end recruits in the country – Scout.com and ESPNU both have him at No. 2 – Thompson chose UF over Wisconsin and Boston College when he announced his decision in May. He took his only official visit in January to visit UF before signing day.
In Thompson, Florida gets perhaps the best blocking tight end in the class. At 255 pounds, Thompson has the size and blocking skills that allowed him to stand out in the Under Armour All-America Game.
“Besides being a big kid, he’s a very good technique blocker, he’s got a mean streak about him and he’s a hard worker,” said Steve Devlin, Thompson’s coach at Archbishop Wood. “Talking to the Florida guys, they expect to use him as both, as a blocking tight end, a guy that can get first downs for them when needed.”
